Configuring Your Wordpress Blog - Getting Started Blueprint 5

So following on from the first 3 steps of the Getting Started Blueprint, you’ve:
- opened a multiple domain hosting account with Hostmonster
- done your keyword research and chosen a niche for your first site
- chosen and bought a domain name
- installed Wordpress onto your new domain
When I started out on my $500 per day quest at the beginning of 2007, a blog was not a tool I considered essential, I just didn’t get what blogging was about or how it worked … for those reasons I spent months avoiding the subject and kept convincing myself that I didn’t need one.
It was only after buying and reading the Wordpress Adsense System by Gobala Kristnen, that the penny dropped as to just how powerful a Blog can be, and in particular a Wordpress blog.
I suddenly understood the benefits of blogging and pinging. I now see how these activities can very quickly spread your content all over the web and get your content ranking well in the search engines.
The main difference between a normal web site and a blog is that the content on the main page of a blog is constantly changing, whereas the front page of a normal web site tends to be static in nature.
But the big advantages of blogging is undoubtedly the automated pinging of other blogs and directories with your updated content, plus the automated production of RSS feeds … all of these features lead to links, links and more links … not all of these links will improve your search engine rankings, but they are all links that have the potential to bring you traffic, and in some cases a lot of traffic.
Wordpress is great because it’s FREE, its pretty easy to use and can easily be hosted on your own domain and web site. Wordpress can be all you need to publish great sites. Wordpress is also great because you can easily add functionality to your blog using Wordpress plugins that are freely available on the web, and when I say freely I mean FREE.
Put simply, EVERY site you publish should have a Blog on it.
I will now detail how you should use your Wordpress Blog to bring in a tonne of traffic in a short space of time …
If you post regularly to your blog, it will rank well in the search engines after a few months and you’ll receive traffic to it very quickly. Search Engines love fresh content. The secret to successful blogging is to post every day, if you do, the search engines will visit your site every day and index your content in their listings.
Another great advantage of blogs is that you can “ping” blog directories every time you make a post. A ping is basically a notification. If you set your blog up correctly, each time you post, the blog directory sites you choose will be notified automatically that you have posted new content. The directory “robots” will then visit your blog and index your content.
Here are the Blog Directories that I ping:

When you’ve set your Wordpress blog up, go to your “Admin” menu choose “Options” and then select “Writing”. Within the “Writing” set up options go to the “Update Services” and copy and paste the above directory addresses into the Update Services box. Once you’ve hit the update button, these directories will be “pinged” or notified every time you make a post to your blog.
Important! To get the most from your Wordpress Blogs, you have to post to it regularly, every day if possible! Some successful “Bloggers” post as often as three times a day!
You’ll be amazed how quickly you’ll see your blog appear in the Search Engine listings.
RECOMMENDED! The best Wordpress resource I’ve found is Gobala Krishnan’s Wordpress Adsense System. It’s a really good course on how to optimise your Wordpress Blog to maximise the traffic you receive to it. It’s comprehensive and comes with all the plugins you’ll need to optimise your Blog. If you’re new to Wordpress it will really speed your learning curve up!
If you can’t afford the Wordpress Adsense System, here are a few plugins I recommend you upload to your Wordpress blog and use:
What’s a plugin I hear you ask? A plugin is simply a piece of code that adds functionality to your blog. Most plugins are free to use!
You simply upload the plugin files to the “plugins” directory on your blog server, and then install them from the Admin section of your blog. Each plugin is designed to add functionality to your blog of some kind. When you download a plugin from a web site you’ll usually find very simple instructions on how to install the plugin.
To make uploading your plugins to your server a breeze once you’ve downloaded them to your hard drive, I suggest you get a FREE copy of Smart FTP (just search for it on Google) … it logs in to your server and makes copying and pasting plugins and themes really easy.
For a pretty comprehensive list of popular plugins, take a look at:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins
Here are some of the plugins I use:
- One Click Installer
- Side Bar Widgets
- Adsense Manager
- SEO In A Box
- Ultimate Tag Warrior
- Codebanter Opt-In Box http://www.codebanter.com/projects/download.php
Simply find the above plugins at the address above or use the url address next to the plugin name.
Install the One Click Installer before you install the others, installation will then be a whole lot easier!
Next, Wordpress Themes …
You can change the look and feel of your Wordpress blog simply by changing it’s theme. There are hundreds of themes to choose from on the web, just search on Google and download ones that you like, copy the files to the “themes” directory on your blog server and then select it from your admin panel menu by selecting “presentation”. It’s that easy, and yet again, most of the themes are FREE!
I’ve picked up blogging pretty quickly, it was not a tool in my original armoury when I set out on my online quest, but now I would recommend Wordpress to anyone setting up a site.
The key to success without a shadow of a doubt is to post every day, or at least very regularly … Google loves the fresh content. The next most important point is to ping as many blog directories as possible every time you post, to use Trackbacks or Pingbacks, and then to submit your RSS feed that Wordpress generates to as many RSS Feed directories as possible, we’ll talk about RSS next.
Your blog will bring you traffic … and lots of it if you do it right!
To learn even more about configuring and using your Wordpress Blog, and to learn about getting traffic from comments and trackbacks, plus discover how to get lots of traffic from your RSS feeds, get a free copy of “List Building Riches” above, and as a thankyou you’ll get the chance to buy “Massive Squeeze Page Traffic” at the really low price of ONLY $37!

Your advice on blog and ping is very valuable. However, some versions of Wordpree will ping automatically whenever you edit an already published post.
For the recommended cure for this problem refer to my post, Blog And Ping - List Of Ping Services, at my blog:
